3 days Halong Bay & Bai Tu Long Bay

Hanoi, Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, Hanoi.

This is a remarkable journey through two different bays of Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. We travel from the sheer limestone peaks of Halong Bay and on to the delights of Bai Tu Long Bay. There's cruising, kayaking, cycling, cooking, beaches and homestay. Come and experience all now!

Day 1 Hanoi / Halong Bay / Lan Ha Bay
Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay of the submerged dragon, which boast 3000 craggy and towering islets, are amongst the most picturesque places in Vietnam.

The fantastic beauty of the bays has given rise to many legends, some of them dating back to the ancient past. It is said that a dragon descended into the deep water spitting out gems as he did so. And thus the rocky islands were formed.

Departing Hanoi we journey to Ha Long City. Upon our arrival we embark on a junk trip amongst some of the spectacular limestone peaks – time to relax and appreciate the sublime beauty of the bay.

Well off the tourist trail, we indulge in Hang Trong, a beautiful spot, perfect for the night on our traditional junk. (Lunch and dinner are included).

Day 2 Halong Bay / Bai Tu Long Bay
A morning cruise brings us to some of the bay’s truly awesome scenery – vertical and unusual rocks and islets emerge from the sea. Weather permitting, there will be an opportunity to swim in the clear waters.

Leaving Halong Bay, we drive due north to Cai Rong Island. In Bai Tu Long Bay we enjoy a beautiful junk trip among the spectacular limestone peaks. Weather permitting, we take a kayaking ride through stunning rock formations and fishing villages.

Arriving on Quan Lan Island, a serene and beautiful island in Bai Tu Long Bay, we head to the family home and farm of Mr Sau, a warm and friendly retired fisherman.

Here, we have the opportunity to learn to make traditional Vietnamese Spring Rolls and succulent fish dipping sauce and Squid dish. Then we share dinner with our host. Tonight we stay overnight with them. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included).

Day 3 Bai Tu Long Bay / Hanoi
Quan Lan Island is located in Bai Tu Long Bay. The island is blessed with stunning beaches, scenic hills, sand dunes and surroundings sprinkled with tiny villages.

There is so much to see and do on Quan Lan Island - why not get a feel for the island by exploring an early fishing market or taking a quiet morning strolling around the picturesque village of Quan Lan and watching the day unfold on the island.

Next, we cycle to explore further northern reaches of the island. Late in the morning we board our junk to discover further northern reaches of Bai Tu Long Bay.

Time permitting, we retire to a beautiful cave and make a wish to have the perfect panoramas of the dramatic rock formations. This is followed by our journey back to Hanoi, arriving there at about 6pm. (Breakfast and lunch are included).

2 days Bai Tu Long Bay

Hanoi, Bai Tu Long Bay, Hanoi.

If we have limited time and wish to have a less conventional experience than Ha Long Bay, yet still want to see its natural wonders, this trip is ideal.

It showcases some of the most impressive sights in Bai Tu Long Bay, from extraordinary rocks to excellent food, wonderful local families and much much more.

Day 1 Hanoi / Bai Tu Long Bay
Being next to Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay is equally magnificent, yet is less frequently visited. Legend has it that the Child Dragon landed here, creating its spectacular landscape. Departing from Hanoi, we drive to Cam Pha town.

Here, we embark on a traditional junk ride which takes us through the most stunning compressed and twisted islets, formed by mountain creation movement that occurred nearly ten million years ago.

This is followed by a kayak ride around picturesque limestone outcrops. Arriving on Van Don island, an island which features white sand beaches, tiny villages and verdant hills, we settle in with a retired fisherman's family for the night. (Lunch and dinner are included).

Day 2 Bai Tu Long Bay / Hanoi
Thousands of years in the making, Van Don island, which is located in Bai Tu Long Bay, is a testament to the period when the sea receded leaving the island surrounded by ivory white sand dunes and stunning crescent beaches.

The island also boasts important historical significance, having once been a trading post and an ancient battleground during the Mongol invasion of Vietnam in the 13th century.

After having breakfast we enjoy bicycle across the island and explore its northern part, the best way to see all the sights, lush surroundings and breaktaking sea view, stay close to the fertile land and its friendly inhabitants. After that we enjoy a junk trip to discover the extent of the bay.

The return journey follows a different route, allowing us a few hours to appreciate the tranquil beauty only found in Bai Tu Long Bay. We return to Hanoi at about 6pm. (Breakfast and lunch are included).

There’s more to northeastern Vietnam than Halong Bay. The sinking limestone plateau, which gave birth to the bay’s spectacular islands, continues for some 100km to the Chinese border. The area immediately northeast of Halong Bay is part of Bai Tu Long National Park

Bai Tu Long Bay is every bit as beautiful as its famous neighbour. Indeed, in some ways it’s more beautiful, since it has scarcely seen any tourist development. This is good news and bad news. The bay is unpolluted and undeveloped, but there’s little tourism infrastructure. It’s pretty hard travelling around and staying here, and unless you speak Vietnamese, it’s difficult to get information.

Charter boats can be arranged to Bai Tu Long Bay from Halong Bay; boats range  per hour depending on size and amenities. See the Halong Bay entry for more details; the one-way trip takes about five hours. A cheaper alternative is to travel overland to Cai Rong and visit the outlying islands by boat from here. Foreigners are almost always charged double the going rate on the ferries around Bai Tu Long Bay.
